As 2016 draws to a close, I felt I should summarize how the year went for me, and maybe realize some things about myself in the process.

Work: This was the year I finally graduated and started working, and though my first job didn't work out, it's allowed me to move on to another that does, at least so far. So as far as work goes this definitely was a major milestone in my life. Best to keep this up all way into the next year and beyond.

Interests: My previous obsession was Gravity Falls, but it's hard to remain dedicated to a show that has ended, however great it was. Rather than try out other TV series, however, I instead jumped over to Overwatch, a game that checks all the right boxes for me. It's definitely the main thing for me now, and will be for a while considering Blizzard's regular updates, but I won't deny I've been neglecting other media or material as a result. So that's something I'll have to change for 2017 for sure.

Art: 2016 was also the year I finally got a grasp on drawing humans properly, even casually, to the point that I've since left behind my previous furry style. The main problems I have are that I still have issues with sometimes waiting for ideas and inspiration instead of seeking them out myself, resulting in long gaps between uploads. And of course my coloring still feels off at times, and solutions on how to improve that aren't very clear to me. Hopefully I can manage my time better between work and play to get better at creating.

Socialization: Sadly this is probably the area I'm still the weakest at. Drifting away from others due to shifts in interests and departure from fandoms, not joining conversations with others at work, not seeking out anyone new to talk to on dA or Tumblr...and to be frank, I don't know how much I actually want to improve at this, given that most people I meet IRL really are just too different for me to discuss anything with besides work. And with social media never having been my strong suit I've basically given up on any illusion of having any substantial following either. So in the end I'll just let it be business as usual: Keep a low profile and don't offend others.

That's how it's been for me personally at least - pretty well, but could be better, and I'll have to do what I can to make it so. Happy New Year.
Might as well say something since it's been a while, and quite a bit has changed since my last post.

I left my last job at the end of June - just didn't have the coding expertise they were looking for - and spent the next 3 months finding work and mostly idling in general. Just had my first day as a software tester at a major bank after two weeks of training. The orientation and preparation is generally much better than the last place, so that's a good start.

What does this mean for my art? I'm not sure. I had 3 months of free time, but that doesn't mean much when it came about due to unemployment. I might even say having a job could actually motivate me better to draw, but we'll see.

That's assuming of course I can come up with more ideas to visualize besides fanart. Haven't had a lot lately. Maybe it's a good thing for now so that I can focus on work better, though hopefully that changes if I do get a midlife crisis about being in a big cubicle sea.

Ah, yeah, read about that. Not sure what to think. I mean, yeah, the possibility of him spicing up Sonic with his own style made me a bit curious, but it just doesn't seem likely, especially for the 25th anniversary game.

But honestly, I really, really don't care what happens to the series anymore. It's not just because of the mismanagement, but even the concept of Sonic has lost its appeal to me. I don't think I have much interest in works with arbitrarily superpowered main characters compared to others in their world anymore. Nowadays I lean more strongly towards stories with characters that actually have to earn their powers or abilities through their hard work.

Sorry for the delayed and lengthy reply. Hope you're fine.

Yeah, I don't think that if Hirsch were to have anything to do with Sonic, that it'd be in time with the 25th anniversary. Still, god damn would it be nice to have some competent writers.

And yeah, I went through kind of a phase where characters that are arbitrarily more powerful than other characters, and the implications that made was kinda off-putting. Even today, I still kinda lean a little in that direction sometimes (e.g., using Sonic's fleetway backstory, Amy has her powers through her bracelets, Knuckles is the guardian of an all-powerful artifact), but then I thought about what the psychological impact of what that may imply, and how it can impact the characters. I actually thought you handled this exceptionally well with Concepts and Balance.

It's a bit of a give and take, yes in many ways I would prefer characters EARNING their status and not just given, but what can that actually DO to a person if they're in that position? I think it makes characters feel less idealistic and more interesting.

But I do get what you mean. It does come off as some characters being privileged. They didn't earn those powers or their social status, so why should they have them? It's such an arbitrary way of giving them value. But I like to flip that on its head. Okay, so you have been given this value, so what do you do with it? And what are the consequences of said value?

Of course, Sonic never really has explored this idea aside from the comics (and Boom, strangely enough), so that can be considered  meaningless. But this is why we have fanfiction writers. At least ones that are competent and aware enough (though this seems to be a dying breed).

And... Oh, wait, now I'm the rambling one. I think I got you beat in terms of lengthy replies, sorry. It's just a fascinating concept. All things considered I'm doing well.

I was rereading through Sonic Concepts, because God knows that there is almost nothing ever posted on Fanfiction.net that's worth reading any more. I still think you had something truly special with that series, and I'm still a bit sad knowing that 3 would never be finished. But, I can't really blame you: after all, it seems as the days go by that the situation for Sonic just more and more bleak.

Nice to see you're doing well on your art. Wish I would stop by more often. But I don't really pay all that much attention to Deviantart.

Hey there, nice to see you again. Thanks for your compliments.

I still feel a bit wistful about it sometimes, but in the end, I've really just moved on from Sonic to other things more worth my time. Hope you're doing okay, but if you find it difficult to do the same like I initially did (and currently still do regarding the recently concluded Gravity Falls), just keep looking - I guarantee you'll find something.

It seems sad that I talk about Sonic like this, but until things drastically change at SEGA/Sonic Team there's basically no reason left to keep clinging onto it. (Well, except the comics, I suppose, but it's still hard to compare to the truly brilliant stuff I've found since then. Archie's constant delays don't help either).

Sorry for the rant, keeps happening when I'm reminded about this, but thanks again for your visit, and I wish you the best.

Ughf. Yeah. I know. It's rough. Sonic's slowly being retooled to being Meme the Hedgehog, and the only thing that's worth following any more is constantly being delayed due to Archie's ineptful financial handling. Depending on how Sonic's 25th pans out, I may just...

Well, no. I won't. I care too much about Sonic's character, and I've seen far worse from the series in my time. I'll just find a way to persevere. I'm a Sonic fan, it's what we do.

In the mean time though, I'll let my wallet speak for me. There's other platformers, and they're doing more exciting things with the genre than Sonic has in the past 7 years. I've divorced myself from Nintendo, I can do it with SEGA too.
